My Village – Poonthura
Free Tuition Home and Fishermen Literacy Program
While we were active in AICUF, I was the unit Secretary during my second Pre-degree year. During the Bachelor Degree years, we initiated a Free Tuition Home for the students in classes 5 to 7. In those days, the parish school, St. Thomas School (no High School yet!), the buildings were not electrified. We, the college-going students in the village, pooled our little pocket-money and did some electric connection. The Free Tuition Program starts at 6 PM to 8 PM, after we all arrive from colleges; the Fishermen Literacy Program at 8 to 9 PM. Next year, we extended to the class 8 too. Thus, the same batch of students in the previous continued; 9th class and in the third year, we added 10th too. Thus same batch students continued until they did SSLC. When I passed SSLC, it was hardly handful of 5 students, who passed the SSLC. While, when this batch reached SSLC, about 35 students passed the SSLC that year!
